These departments frequently barely have enough revenue to keep the lights on. Things like training and new equipment to keep them safe are not even an option for these departments. Much of their equipment does not even meet the current standards.

Volunteer Firefighter Health Benefit Legislation Approved by State Senate
Thanks to the efforts of Putnam County State Senator Peter Harckham, the State Senate has approved legislation to help expand health benefits for volunteer firefighters. The legislation, if approved by the Assembly and enacted by the governor, will make permanent the long-standing law covering disability determinations for volunteer firefighters due to certain lung disabilities.
Study finds higher levels of potentially harmful chemicals in volunteer firefighters
A recent study of volunteer firefighters shows that their bodies have higher levels of “forever chemicals” than those of people in the general public, and the amount of these potentially harmful substances likely rises with time and exposures.
